With fall soon approaching, we’d like to share our tried and true favorite trees that give fall color! Fall color can bring more seasonality to your garden, making it more interesting each season.

There are many different shapes and sizes of trees, so it is good to research to see which one will fit in your yard and give you the look you want.

Ginkgo biloba

If you like bright yellow leaves, Ginkgo trees are for you! This tree puts on a spectacular show of golden yellow leaves through Thanksgiving. There are several different cultivars we have in stock, including:

(Left to right: ‘Autumn Gold’, ‘Presidential Gold’, and ‘Golden Colonnade’)

The difference between these varieties is the mature tree shape. ‘Autumn Gold’ has a medium size of 45’x35′ while ‘Presidential Gold’ grows to 50’x40′. ‘Golden Colonnade’ has a more narrow tree shape, reaching 45’x25′. All of these cultivars are seedless.

Red Maples

Maples provide striking colors of orange and red in the fall. They also provide year-round interest with lush green leaves from spring through summer.

(Left to right: ‘October Glory‘, ‘Urban Sunset‘, and ‘Pacific Sunset‘)

‘October Glory’ reaches 40’x35′ while ‘Urban Sunset’ has a more narrow form at 35’x20′. Pacific Sunset is a smaller variety growing 30’x25′.

(Left to right: ‘Redpointe‘, ‘Mesa Glow‘, and ‘Ruby Sunset‘)

‘Redpointe’ is a larger tree which grows to 45’x30′. ‘Mesa Glow’ is a more compact maple reaching 28’x18′. ‘Ruby Sunset’ is also on the smaller side, growing 25’x20′.

Fall is the BEST time to plant deciduous trees, just before they drop their leaves. This enables the tree to get established before the hot summers we have in the Central Valley. Learn more about planting in fall here.
