It’s already that time of year to be thinking about bareroot fruit trees!

“What is a bareroot tree, and why should I buy one?”

A bareroot tree is an unpotted tree, directly harvested from the ground, and the soil is removed from the roots. They are then kept dormant until they are shipped in January.

The benefits of buying a bareroot tree are:

  1. Easy planting– An unpotted tree is much easier to plant than a 5-gallon container because you don’t have to dig as large a hole.
  2. More variety– By pre-ordering a bareroot tree, you have more variety in what is available than what will be sold in-store when they arrive. Secure your tree varieties here.
  3. Longer roots– When the tree is not confined to a small pot area, the roots have more space to grow. Longer roots=happier plant!

“How do I plant a bareroot tree?”

  1. Start digging a hole as deep as the rootball and at least twice as wide. Loosen the soil around the rootball to allow the roots to grow easily.
  2. Before planting, add organic amendments to the hole. Ask our expert staff at The Greenery Nursery for which amendments to add.
  3. Plant the tree with the soil you removed from the hole mixed with amendments. Gently tamp down the soil to support the tree’s rootball, but not so hard that you compact the soil.
  4. Water, water, water. This is the most crucial step! Optional: Adding a layer of mulch around the tree will help the rootball retain moisture. Keep the mulch at least 2″ from the trunk to prevent rotting.

Now you have a new fruit tree planted in your yard! Planting a fruit tree will provide abundance for years to come. Call or stop by the nursery if you have any additional questions or concerns when planting, we’d are here to help!
