Raspberry Bellini Crape Myrtle

Crape Myrtles thrive in the heat in the Central Valley. While most think of Crape Myrtles as a large growing tree, there are many new varieties with smaller growing and fantastic characteristics!

 

Larger varieties:

  • ‘Catawba’ – Medium purple flower, Orange-red fall color, 15-18′ tall by 15-18′ wide
  • ‘Tuscarora’ – Dark pink flowers, Orange-red fall color, 15-20′ tall by 15-20′ wide
  • ‘Zuni’ – Dark lavender flowers, Orange-red fall color, 9′ tall by 8′ wide
  • ‘Dynamite’ – Cherry red flowers, Orange fall color, 15-18′ tall by 15-18′ wide
  • ‘Natchez’ – White flowers, Orange-red fall color, 20′ tall and wide

 

Newer varieties that grow less than 15′ tall:

These varieties make great screening shrubs, large hedges, or multi-stem focal point.

  • ‘Pink Velour’ – Bright pink flowers, in summer, high mildew resistance, deep wine-colored foliage, grows 12′ tall by wide
  • ‘Moonlight Magic’ – Purple-maroon foliage with white flowers, upright growth habit lends itself to tree status, good leaf spot and mildew resistance, grows 8-12′ tall by 4-6′ wide
  • ‘Ruffled Red Magic’ – Carnation like glowing red flowers, orange-red fall color, compact upright growth habit with dense branching, grow 10′ tall by 8′ wide
  • ‘Sunset Magic’ – Large brilliant red flower heads against dark foliage, deep black purple leaves hold color well, a problem-free alternative to purple leaf plum, grow 5-10′ tall by 4-8′ wide
  • ‘Moonlight Magic’ – Purple-maroon foliage with white flowers, prone to powdery mildew, so it is great for hot, dry areas; upright grow habit lends itself to tree status, grows 8-12′ tall by 4-6′ wide
  • ‘Lunar Magic’ – Dark purple foliage with white flowers, resistant to powdery mildew, grows 6-10′ tall by 4-8′ wide
  • ‘Plum Magic’ – Fuchsia pink flowers throughout summer, New foliage is purple and matures to dark green, grows 6-10′ tall and wide
  • ‘Coral Magic’ – Coral-colored flowers in summer, dense shrub with a beautifully rounded form, Excellent resistance to leaf spot and powdery mildew, grows 6-10′ tall and wide
  • ‘Purple Magic’ – Early summer bloomer with dark purple flowers, Reddish new growth maturing to glossy green, Highly resistant to leaf spot and powdery mildew, grows 6-10′ tall and wide

Newer varieties that grow less than 8′ tall:

No need to prune to maintain the size of these varieties because they stay small.

 

  • ‘Petite Orchid’ – Light purple flowers, dwarf-upright shrub, grows 5′ tall x 4′ wide
  • ‘Midnight Magic’ – Purple-maroon foliage with dark pink flowers, rounded compact growth habit, good leaf spot and mildew resistance, grows 4-6′ tall and wide
  • ‘Petite Pinkie’ – Clear pink flowers, dwarf-upright shrub, grows 5′ tall x 4′ wide
  • ‘Petite Embers’ – Profusion rose-red flower, dwarf-upright shrub, grows 5′ tall x 4′ wide
  • ‘Petite Snow’ – Profusion of snow white flowers, dwarf-upright shrub, grows 5′ tall x 4′ wide
  • ‘Enduring Summer Red’ – Early flowering + reblooming scarlet red, flowers. Glossy red then dark green foliage, resists powdery mildew and heat, 4′-5′ tall and wide
  • ‘Berry Dazzle’ – Brilliant fuchsia-purple blooms early summer, great compact border plant or landscape accent, performs well in containers, grows 3-4′ tall and wide
  • ‘Raspberry Bellini’ – Deep raspberry-pink blooms set against rich, green foliage. Low, compact, mounded shrub. Early bloomer. Resists powdery mildew, grows 3-4′ tall and wide
